The work of the iconic Coco Chanel
Gabrielle Chanel is the official exhibition book of 'Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto', the first UK exhibition dedicated to the work of the iconic Coco Chanel, on display at the V&A Museum in London since 16 September 2023. The book, compiled by exhibition curators Oriole Cullen and Connie Karol Burks, offers a rich overview of Chanel's influential fashion designs, combined with archive photographs, sketches and new photography by Nicholas Alan Cope.
The aim of the catalogue is to capture the luxury and power of the exhibition on its printed pages. The book's cover, designed by Daniela Rocha, was inspired by vintage Chanel perfume packaging from the 1920s and 1930s. The design had to pay homage to both the designer and the Chanel brand, and impress in the museum shop and bookstore.

Cooperation with Graphius
Graphius delivered high quality, competitive prices and fast delivery times, which was crucial for this grand exhibition. Cooperation went smoothly, with a visit to the print shop as the highlight. This gave a unique insight into the printing and binding process and confirmed the quality of the final result.
Technical specifications
The production of the book required careful collaboration with Graphius' production team. The team opted for printing on fabric, with Brillianta Calandré as the final material. This white book binding cloth was printed with a customised cream pantone colour to maintain the luxurious look. LED UV printing was used to prevent the ink from soaking too much into the fabric, ensuring a sharp and vibrant result.
The edge of the catalogue, a detail of a dress from the collection, was converted to four-colour black for added depth. The cover contains layers with a foil-printed frame and title, adding an extra dimension. To meet the museum shop's durability requirements, the fabric cover was tested for stain resistance without shrink wrap.
