An award-winning exhibition catalogue for Yoshitomo Nara
An exhibition is temporary, a book endures. Guided by this conviction, Hayward Gallery Publishing produced the catalogue to accompany the Yoshitomo Nara retrospective at the Hayward Gallery in London. The book is much more than a memento of the exhibition: it is a standalone publication that invites the reader to discover Nara’s body of work in a new way. The catalogue comprises 256 pages, contains over 200 colour illustrations and was awarded the British Book Design & Production Award in the Best Exhibition Catalogue category.

Collaboration with Graphius
Together with our order coordinator at Graphius, who always provides excellent advice, we tested three different types of paper and sent the results to Nara and his reproduction team in Japan to see which they preferred.
Technical Specifications
The catalogue was produced in a generous format of 228 × 300 mm and comprises 256 pages. For the interior, a deliberate choice was made to use two complementary paper types: Woodstock Betulla 140 g/m², an uncoated paper with a warm, natural texture, and Symbol Tatami Ivory 135 g/m², which subtly distinguishes the various sections of the book from one another. The combination of a linen hardback with gold foil, high-quality reproductions and carefully selected materials results in a book that not only makes a visual impression but also offers a distinctly tactile reading experience.
